Role of Insulation Materials and Cryogenic Coolants on Fault Performance of MW-Scale Fault-Tolerant Current-Limiting Superconducting Transformers

Fault-tolerant current-limiting (FTCL) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) transformers are promising components for playing a role in renewable energy integrated modern power systems. In this article, the impact of different insulation materials and cryogenic coolant fluids on electro-thermal characteristic an MW-scale FTCL-HTS transformer is investigated. For purpose, equivalent circuit model (ECM) established to characterize temperature, recovery time, fault tolerability under conditions. The proposed ECM firstly validated using experimental results typical HTS transformer. After that developed 50 MVA, 132 kV/13.8 kV order add tolerance capability MVA transformer, three strategies were considered article. first strategy, effect (including Kapton tapes, Nomex papers, Acrylated Urethane solid insulation) covering tapes was investigated performance. second strategy changing fluid liquid hydrogen instead nitrogen. As last impacts thickness material properties stabilizer tape maximum temperature time Results show by these strategies, winding short reduced.
